Many people were in attendance, including Dara O’Briain and Eddie Redmayne, who gave a reading from the bible at the service. Hawking’s remains were buried near the grave of Isaac Newton.

Less than 24 hours after the funeral, a charity in Cambridge revealed that Hawking had helped them to put on an extra-special Easter lunch this year.

FoodCycle Cambridge, a charity that provides the local community with cooked meals several days a week, announced on Twitter that they’d be having a very special Easter lunch this year.

When people arrived for their lunch over the weekend, they learned that their entire banquet had been donated by Stephen Hawking’s family, on behalf of the late astrophysicist.

FoodCycle shared photos of the food that they had to offer and wrote:

We’re so grateful to the hawking family for their generous donation so we could give our guests an extra special Easter meal.

They said that 50 guests at the meal had “a little cheer in honour of Stephen Hawking” before they tucked into the meal.

Speaking to ITV, FoodCycle’s regional manager Alex Collis said:

Lucy Hawking contacted me and mentioned that the family would like to make a donation so that while the funeral was taking place, people would be sitting down to a hot meal ‘on Stephen’. It was a really kind gesture that I think fit well with the sympathy Professor Hawking felt for people who were having a tough time.
